Working with recipes

The Recipe tab contains the following fields that allow you to type in specific information for a new recipe or to modify ingredients in a recipe. Click the field name to jump to its information.

  • Cooking time

The Recipe tab is not available when you select Food/Basic Food.

To use the Recipe tab, complete the following steps:

  1. Click on the navigation bar.
  2. Click on the navigation bar.
  3. Click the open arrow followed by Food/Recipe from the menu bar.
  4. Type the name of the recipe in the Name field.
  5. Select (None), consumer or quantity from the Type list. This is an optional field, used to sort recipes in the Recipe Books editor.
  6. Type the Number of servings in the field. This is a required field.

Changing the Recipe tab's Number of servings field does not change the portion amount. You must change the portion manually in the General tab's Serving amount and unit fields.

  1. Select the category from the Meal component list. This is an optional field, used to sort recipes in the Recipe Books editor.
  2. Select the Preparation method. This is an optional field.
  3. Type the Preparation time. This is an optional field.
  4. Type the Cooking temperature. This is an optional field.
  5. Type the Cooking time. This is an optional field.
  6. Type the Moisture loss. This is an optional field that will change the weight and moisture content of the recipe.
  7. Click . The Add Food dialog box appears and allows you to search for an existing food to add as an ingredient in a recipe.
  • If the Generate recipe ingredient text automatically check box is selected in General Defaults, the text field from the Properties appears in the Ingredients area when adding a new food.
  1. Select the appropriate food from the Add Foods dialog box and click . A Properties dialog box appears with information for the food. Complete the Properties dialog box.
  2. Add additional foods until all the necessary ingredients are added.
  • Click to remove a selected food.
  • Click or to rearrange the order of the ingredients, to move the item higher or lower on the list.

Changing the Recipe tab's Number of servings field does not change the portion amount. You must change the portion manually in the General tab's Serving amount and unit fields. If you need to scale a recipe go up to Tools/Scale.

  1. Modify the information in the following tabs as appropriate:
  • General - the Classification, Serving Amount and Unit fields must be filled in before saving the recipe.
  • Nutrients - cannot be edited in recipes; only ingredients can be edited.
  • Exchanges
  • Pyramid Categories
  • My Pyramid Categories
  1. The Instructions and Notes areas are for entering information about the recipe.
  • For instance, you can type the instructions for completing the recipe in Instructions and special notes about the tasks or ingredients in Notes.
  1. Scale the recipe, if desired.
  2. Add HACCPs to the recipe, if desired.
  1. Modify the Manufacturer, if desired.
  2. Click to save the recipe . The file name will match the entry in the Name field.

If you rename a food and copy it to or from a recipe, the copied food name reverts to the original food name as defined in the database.
