Searching for foods, recipes, or nutrient goals

Searches are performed when opening foods or recipes, adding foods to diets or menus, opening recipe books, opening nutrient goal templates, and selecting nutrient goals.

The search dialog box contains these tabbed sections:

Make selections in these cumulative tabbed sections independently or together.

  • Nutrients

After completing the tabbed sections, use the following buttons and commands to perform these functions:

  • , click to perform the search. A maximum of 1000 items can appear in the list.
  • , click to stop the search in progress. The search displays results in increments of 100. If you click Stop before results begin to fill in, no results appear.
  • , click to clear the list and perform a new search.
  • , click to save the search. A dialog box appears for entering the name for the search. The search will appear in the Saved search drop-down list.

  • , click to save a copy of the search under a different name. A dialog box appears for entering the name for the search. The search will appear in the Saved search drop-down list.
  • , click to add an item from the list in an Add dialog box. Use the Add dialog box for adding foods or recipes, as appropriate, to recipes, recipe books, diets, and menus. Use the Properties dialog box as appropriate. Add foods repeated throughout diets and menus for a specific meal using the Add every (Days) feature.
  • , click to close the Add Food search without saving.
  • , click to open an item from the list in an Open dialog box. Use the Open dialog box to open a food or recipe for editing.
  • , click to cancel the Open Food search without saving.
  • , click to access the Food Search Reports dialog box to print information from the search.
  • 100g values, click to scale the nutrients to 100 grams. This selection changes the serving amount to 100 grams. When 100g values is selected, the nutrient search still uses the criteria for nutrients in a typical serving, but displays scaled results.
  • View/Columns (accessed via tool bar in the open/ add food window) or Right-click in Search Results/Columns, select which columns appear in the search results.
  • Sort, click any column heading to sort the items in the list based on that item and to toggle between Ascending and Descending order for displaying search items. The selection appears in the status bar at the bottom of the search dialog. The selected sort order remains until changed again.
  • Text list boxes, view the most recent items typed in a drop-down list and used for searching. Up to 20 items are stored in the list box for the entry. For example, if you type a food in the Name contains field, that food is stored in the Name contains list box. Up to 20 items remain in that list box and can be selected for future searches.

Basic

The Basic tab provides choices that limit the search based on the food, recipe, or template's name. The food's unique code can be used with the Open Food search.

  1. In the Name contains field, type the name of the food or an ingredient for the search.
    • The last 20 items used for searching in the Name contains drop-down list are stored in the list box.
    • If you are unsure of the spelling, click the Use phonetics check box.

Phonetic searches do not work with names containing only numbers.

  1. In the Open Food and Add Food dialog boxes only, if you know the Unique code or part of it, type the code in the Unique code contains field.
    • The last 20 items used for searching in the Unique code contains drop-down list are stored in the list box.

The Unique Code is only for foods.

Status

The Status tab provides choices that limit the search for a specific food based on the condition of the food.

To use the Status tab, choose one or more of the following option buttons for each field:

  • Data Source
  • Axxya Systems, displays foods from the Axxya Systems database.

Click the Axxya Systems option to see only foods and recipe books that come with Nutritionist Pro.

  • Custom, displays foods added to the database by the user.
  • Both
  • Discontinued
  • Yes, displays foods in the database that have been discontinued by the manufacturer.
  • No, displays only foods in the database that have not been discontinued by the manufacturer.
  • Both
  • Common
  • Yes, displays foods designated as commonly consumed foods.
  • No, displays foods that have not been designated as commonly consumed foods.
  • Both
  • Type
  • Recipe, displays the recipes in the database. This selection limits the search to recipes only.
  • Basic Food, displays all food items in the database, excluding recipes.
  • Both
  • with ingredient is an optional field that allows you to search for ingredients within a recipe.
  • The last 20 items used for searching in the with ingredient drop-down list are stored in the list box.

Source

The Source tab provides choices that limit the search for a specific food based on the origination of the food.

To use the Source tab, complete the following steps:

  1. Choose one of the following Generic field option buttons:
    • Yes, displays foods not associated with a specific brand name.
    • No, displays foods that are associated with a specific brand name.
    • Both

Selecting either the Yes or Both option makes the Manufacturer field unavailable. Selecting the No option makes the Manufacturer field available.

  1. In the Manufacturer list, click the manufacturer's name. To add a custom manufacturer, use the Modifying Manufacturer dialog box.
  2. In Excluded References, click the appropriate check box next to the reference that should not be searched.
  3. Click the Excluded items only check box to display only the references that you have selected to be excluded.

Classification

The Classification tab is used to limit the search for a specific food based on its category. Classifying foods groups foods by category.

To use the Classification tab, complete the following steps:

  1. Click . The Select Food Class dialog box appears with a list of food classifications.
  2. Select the appropriate classification folder from the list. Double-click a classification or click the plus sign (+) next to a classification to open the subclassifications.
  3. Click . The classification appears in the window.
    • To remove a food classification, click next to .
    • Click to exit the dialog box without making changes.
  4. Click the Include option to include only food in the classification in the search, or click the Exclude option to exclude food in the classification from the search.

a. If the Include option is selected, the Include subclassification check box appears. Click to include the subclassifications for the food in the search.

b. If the Exclude option is selected, the Exclude subclassification check box appears. Click to exclude the subclassifications for the food from the search.

Nutrients

The Nutrients tab is used to perform a nutrient query for a specific food based on the food's nutrient content. You can either specify exact nutrient values or simply specify nutrients for a food search to find the most appropriate food for creating diets, recipes, and menus, or you can also search for up to 10 nutrients within a diet, menu, or recipe.

Search by nutrient values

To use the Nutrients tab to view foods containing only the values of selected nutrients, complete the following steps:

  1. Click .
  2. Select a nutrient or select multiple nutrients from the Add Nutrient dialog box. Selected nutrients appear as column headings in the search dialog box.
  3. Click .
  4. Select any additional nutrients by repeating these steps until all the appropriate nutrients have been added.
  5. Click .
  6. Select a nutrient in the list you just created.
  7. Select one of the following phrases from the drop-down list next to the nutrient list:
    • (All Values)
    • Equal to
    • Not equal to
    • Less than
    • Greater than
    • Less than or equal to
    • Greater than or equal to
  8. Type the amount in the measurement unit field.
  9. Select a phrase and amount for each nutrient in the list.
  10. Select View/Columns from the search dialog. The Select Columns dialog box appears.

a. Select additional column headings as desired.

b. Click and the selected column names appear in the search dialog.

  1. Click a nutrient column heading to sort by the nutrient in ascending or descending order.

For example, to search for all foods that have < 250 mg of sodium and > 500 mg of potassium follow these steps:

  1. Select Sodium and Potassium from the Add Nutrient dialog box.
  2. Select Sodium and Less than from the list.
  3. Enter 250 in the mg field.
  4. Select Potassium and Greater than from the list
  5. Enter 500 in the mg field.
  6. Click and a list of foods meeting these criteria appear in the search dialog box and Sodium and Potassium appear as column headings.
  7. Click a column heading to sort by that item.
    • Click the Sodium column heading to sort the list of foods by the amount of Sodium.
    • Click the Potassium column heading to sort the list of foods by the amount of Potassium.

Search by nutrients

To use the Nutrients tab to view foods containing selected nutrients, complete the following steps:

  1. Click .
  2. Select a nutrient or select multiple nutrients from the Add Nutrient dialog box. Selected nutrients appear as column headings in the search dialog box.
  3. Click .
  4. Select any additional nutrients by repeating these steps until all the appropriate nutrients have been added.
  5. Click .
  6. Select View/Columns from the search dialog. The Select Columns dialog box appears.

a. Select additional column headings as desired.

b. Click and the selected column names appear in the search dialog.

  1. Click a nutrient column heading to sort by the nutrient in ascending or descending order.
