Adding new food labels

Access to this screen is only available if you have purchased the Food Labeling option.

Add information about a new food label to the data base by following these steps:

  1. Click on the navigation bar.
  2. Click on the navigation bar.
  3. Click .
  4. The Select Food Label Type dialog box appears with a list of the types of food labels and a sample preview window. The default is a New Vertical Label.
  5. Highlight a selection and click . The selected type appears in the read only Type field next to the Name field.
note

The fields in the top section of the screen change depending on the type of food label selected.

  1. Enter a name in the Name field.
note

By default, New Food Label appears in this field. To avoid saving over another label, enter a unique name for each new label.

  1. Click the Use 4-4-9 check box to use the macronutrients to calculate the calories. The calories are determined by multiplying the grams of protein and carbohydrates by 4 and the grams of fat by 9. The calories are totaled from the macronutrients and rounded according to the FDA guidelines. This is an optional field.
note

The calories are determined by fat, protein, and carbohydrates as described above. Editing calories clears the check box because the edit overrides the calculated calories. Editing total fat, total carbohydrate, or protein recalculates the calories and maintains the check box selection. Changes are maintained until changed again.

  1. Click the Include caloric conversion footnote check box to display a footnote on the food label to indicate how the calories were calculated. This is an optional field.
note

Calories are rounded. Only values that appear in black are printed on labels. Gray values are not printed.

  1. Click the Calculate %DV before rounding check box. The Percent Daily Values (%DV) are calculated on the actual amount of each nutrient before the rounding rules are applied. This is an optional field.
note

Calories are rounded if printed on labels. If the value is not printed, it is not rounded. Only values that appear in black are printed on labels. Gray values are not printed.

  1. Click the Include exchanges and Include ingredient list check boxes to display tabs for exchanges and ingredients. These are separate, optional fields.
  2. Click the Include Protein %DV check box to include the %Daily Value for protein on the label. This is an optional field unless a protein claim is made on the product, or the label type is Child or Infant. When this check box is selected, both the %DV and the Nutrient Value appear on the label.
note

The Protein Daily Reference Value (DRV) for adults and children over 4 years old is 50 grams.

  1. Click the Include summary statement check box. This is an optional field and only appears with these types of food labels: shortened vertical, simplified vertical, simplified tabular, shortened linear, and simplified linear. If selected, the summary statement "Not a significant source of..." will appear for nutrients with valid values on these types of food labels.
  2. The Servings per container field varies depending on the package size, specific to a particular food in its packaged form. If a recipe is used for a food label, then the number of servings for the recipe will be used for the Servings per container for the label. You may edit this value.
  3. The Additional quantitative footnote field appears for Dual Declaration food labels. This footnote describes the information that appears in the column on the right.
note

Use the up and down arrows to view the entire footnote.

  1. Either click in the toolbar, next to the Food field, or beneath the Foods area depending on the type of Food Label. The Add Food dialog box appears.
  2. Add a food.
note
